River Conditions

June 17th, 2014 by rca_president No comments »

River Conditions
Ahead of the forecast preciptation the following advisories have been issued:

Bow River Basin:
Flood Watch – Wallaceville area in the Town of High River – forecast flows indicate that water levels could approach the flood threshold values in this area of the Town. There are NO flooding concerns in any other portion of the town given the current weather forecast.

High Streamflow Advisory – Elbow River, Fish Creek, Highwood River, Tributaries to the Bow
With the current weather forecast, water levels upstream of the Glenmore Dam along the Elbow River may rise up to 1m.

The City of Calgary has started to outflow from Glenmore Dam in anticipation of these inflows, which will be significantly lower than last year. However, this controlled outflow from the dam will still necessitate the closure of a number of trails along the Elbow River downstream of the dam.
Inflows to Ghost Reservoir upstream of the City of Calgary are not expected to require any large changes to outflow based on the current weather forecast.

Flood Preparation Open House at Ramsay Hall on Wed May 7

April 30th, 2014 by rca_admin No comments »

From the City of Calgary:

The City of Calgary is hosting two more open houses for Calgarians in May to share what steps The City is taking and what people can do to prepare for the potential of flooding this year.

The first open house will be Wednesday, May 7, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Ramsay Community Association hall, 1136 8 St. SE.

The second open house will be held Thursday, May 15, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Foothills Academy, 745 37 St. N.W.

Staff from a number of business units including the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), Calgary Fire Department, Development & Building Approvals, Water Service and Water Resources, Calgary Police Service, Community & Neighbourhhood Services and the Flood Recovery Operations Centre will be on hand to share information and answer questions.

Representatives from The City’s Expert Management Panel on River Flood Mitigation and the Government of Alberta will also be available.

The sessions will be drop-in style with no formal presentations. That way, residents can chose when to drop in, explore the information tables at their leisure and speak with staff in their areas of interest.

These will be the final two information sessions being hosted by The City this spring. More than 1,200 Calgarians have already attended four open houses hosted by The City and Province in March and April.

Calgarians are encouraged to visit www.calgary.ca/floodprep for ongoing update and information. The website outlines what The City is doing and what people can do to be prepared. Information on river flows and watershed monitoring will also be available on that website once river monitoring ramps up in mid-May.
